Bridget Pericolo, 78, shows off her wedding and engagement rings that were mistakenly thrown in the trash and later recovered from the dump by her husband, Angelo. Bridget and Angelo Pericolo have been married for 55 years – not the kind of love you toss away.
A devoted New Jersey man rooted through 10 tons of noxious trash to find his wife’s wedding and engagement rings after mistakenly tossing out the jewelry with the trash.
When Angelo Pericolo returned home Monday with the missing bling, his wife of 55 years said she breathed in more than the sweet smell of success.
“It’s a miracle, I tell you,” she said, proudly sporting her two rings in the couple’s Morris Plains home. “But I knew we would find them.”
His wife left the rings inside a paper cup on a living room table Sunday night. The cup – and its contents – were gone the next morning.
Her husband didn’t share her optimism about finding the rings, a present dating to their 30th wedding anniversary.
“Keep those rings in your memory, because you are not going to see them again,” Angelo told her.
But Bridget prayed – and then called the the town sanitation department. They tracked down the truck, and her husband headed to a Parsippany public works facility to hunt for the rings.
Angelo and two sanitation workers spent an hour rooting through the 10 tens of trash – and then he spotted a trash bag with a familiar hand-made knot.
“I told them, ‘That’s it. That’s the one,’” he said. “I dug through a lot of other stuff before that.”
When Pericolo opened the bag, the engagement diamond ring immediately popped out. He dug and found the actual wedding ring at the bottom of the bag.
“Now I believe in miracles,” he said.
Thirty years into their marriage and with more money coming in from his landscaping business, Pericolo surprised her with the new set of rings, she said.
“He actually chose these, so they have more meaning for me and him,” she said.
The once-again happy couple said the return of the rings was an early Christmas present – and Mrs. Pericolo said she planned on better security for the jewelry.
“I don’t know why he thought it was garbage,” she said. “Now I’m going to put them away in a safe place every night.”
